Gabriella Taylor has won The Big Racket’s GB player of the month for a second consecutive month. Taylor won a whopping 70% of the final vote, with Jodie Burrage and Alfie Hewett both claiming 11%, and Jamie Murray just 8%.
March saw Taylor continue her elevation up the rankings, as she continues to cement a place inside the top 200. After winning a third ITF 25k title at the beginning of the month in Mildura, Taylor showed solid form on the clay courts, reaching the semi finals of a 60k event and the quarter finals of a 25k event, both in Canberra.
As Gabi prepares to leave Australia, she has proven she can adapt her style on all courts which is an exciting prospect for British fans. It’ll be good to see Taylor take a mini break and recuperate ahead of the grass season, where she is almost guaranteed to receive a few wild cards to the main draw for a number of tournaments.
With entrance to the French Open Qualifying looking almost guaranteed, it’s an exciting time for the British number four. She will also provide Anne Keothavong with a welcome headache ahead of the Fed Cup selection process. With the current squad in poor form, the question as to whether Taylor deserves a place in Britain’s squad is sure to be asked.
Personally, I don’t think now would be the right time for Taylor to be introduced to the Fed Cup squad. After a whirlwind four months, it would be more beneficial for Taylor to concentrate on coping with the pressures of the tour. If she can overcome the challenges ahead, she will become a better player and certainly an asset for Great Britain’s Fed Cup team next year.
