The American summer swing is nearly over and with it has come mixed emotions for British tennis fans. Jo Konta, Heather Watson and Kyle Edmund all suffered early exits, but the likes of Cameron Norrie, Liam Broady and Katie Boulter provided a much needed spark in the qualifying rounds. As April nears, we take a look at the four players shortlisted for The Big Racket’s player of the month for March.
1. Jamie Murray
Despite disappointing exits in both Indian Wells and Miami, it’s easy to forget that Jamie Murray started the month with a title in Acapulco. Alongside Bruno Soares, Jamie defeated the Bryan Brothers 7-6 7-5 in a tense final at the ATP 500 event to complete a double British doubles victory, following Heather Watson’s title with Tatjana Maria.
2. Alfie Hewett
After taking the world number one crown at the end of January, Alfie Hewett continued his success as he won his first Super Series title in Baton Rouge. The Briton overcame Australian Open champion Shingo Kunieda 6-3 7-6 (8-6) in the final and won the title without dropping a set. The tournament is one of six Super Series events and is one of the most prestigious tournaments outside of the Grand Slams.
3. Gabriella Taylor
February’s player of the month is at it again, playing fantastic tennis and winning another title. Gabriella Taylor won her third ITF 25k title of the year in Mildura, where she showed her exciting potential on the grass courts in Australia. She followed this up with an impressive run to the semi finals of the ACT Clay Court International in Canberra, giving her a win-loss record of 20-2 on three surfaces in 2018.
4. Jodie Burrage
Last, but by no means least, is Jodie Burrage. The teenager won her first title of 2018, and second of her career in Sharm El Sheikh this month. Going in as the 5th seed, Burrage defeated qualifier Nadja Gilchrist in the final to ensure she’ll start April with a new career high.
