Freya Christie shows promise on injury return

After dropping outside of the top 600 after difficult injury spells, Freya Christie returned this week in a 15k ITF event in Wirral, making the quarter finals.

Despite a cruel three-set loss to Eden Silva, Christie showed plenty of encouraging signs this week as she starts her comeback on the tour. The Nottingham-born 19 year-old looked impressive on her serve, hitting 10 aces and winning 74% of her first service points. All of this despite recovering from the dreaded wrist injury.

The injury has disrupted the progress of the young talent but after 20 aces in three matches this week, she is clearly ready to climb back up the rankings. Last year, she finished inside the world’s top 300 and reached a career high of 286. This warranted a wild card to the Aegon Open in Nottingham, where she lost on her WTA debut to Zheng Saisai.

Earlier in the week, Christie tweeted that she is glad to be back and injury-free, putting this week into perspective. Getting back onto the court was a far greater achievement than winning the tournament and earning back-to-back victories this week is an added bonus.

With the off-season just around the corner, returning this week could prove to be a masterstroke as she aims to recapture her excellent form from 2016. Next week sees Christie on the entry list for another 15k ITF event, this time in Sunderland. After a week of making significant progress, Christie will be hoping to go one or two rounds further to take a first ITF title.

Whatever the outcome, I think we can all agree it’s great to see Freya Christie return to winning ways on British soil.
